BESS ROI: How Smarter Electricity Utilization Pays Off

THE Energy Commission, Suruhanjaya Tenaga issued updated SELCO (Solar for Self-Consumption) guidelines, and effective 1 January 2026, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is now a mandatory requirement for larger-scale solar installations in Malaysia. This signals that regulators now see energy storage as a fundamental part of solar system design, not an optional add-on.

For businesses operating under this requirement, BESS has moved from a "nice-to-have" to a compliance necessity almost overnight, putting it at the centre of energy planning conversations across Malaysia's commercial and industrial sectors as businesses work out what the new guidelines mean for their operations.

A BESS is, at its core, a system that stores electrical energy for use later, allowing businesses to capture surplus energy generated on-site and discharge it strategically when needed. On the surface, this role appears limited to meeting the requirement. But it's worth asking: how much further can BESS be put to work beyond that? From one perspective, could the same system also assist in managing your electricity bill, or does its potential stop at compliance?

Customer Challenges:

Since 1 July 2025, Malaysia's electricity tariff structure has evolved under Regulatory Period 4 (RP4), expanding Time-of-Use (ToU) pricing to a wider base of consumers. Under this structure, businesses now pay significantly more for electricity consumed during peak periods compared to off-peak hours. Without a way to actively shift consumption between these periods, businesses end up absorbing higher costs simply based on when they operate, rather than how much they use. This is especially relevant for facilities running standard day shifts and business hours, which often fall within these peak windows, making it worthwhile to explore ways of adjusting consumption patterns where possible.

For Commercial & Industrial (C&I) electricity consumers on Maximum Demand (MD) tariff structures, a short spike in usage during just a single half-hour interval each month can set the MD charge for the entire billing cycle, and many facilities may find it challenging to actively monitor, predict, or flatten these demand peaks in real time without the right tools in place. Without automated load management, facility teams are often left reacting to these charges only after seeing the monthly bill, rather than managing consumption as happens.

The scale of this shift is significant. Businesses previously under Tariff E2 (Medium Voltage Peak/Off-Peak Industrial Tariff), for example, are now switching to the Non-Domestic Medium Voltage ToU tariff, where the MD charge has increased from RM37/kW to RM97.06/kW, an almost threefold increase that meaningfully raises the cost of every kW of uncontrolled demand.

RM37/kW  →  RM97.06/kW

Some businesses may also have limited visibility into how their actual load profile interacts with ToU and MD charges, which can make it harder to determine when a facility is being affected by peak-hour usage versus genuine capacity constraints, a gap that can sometimes contribute to higher-than-expected monthly electricity bills.

Adding to this, overall electricity demand for many businesses is on the rise, whether from expanding operations, growing automation, or the adoption of EV fleets. New production lines, additional equipment, and round-the-clock automated processes all add to a facility's baseline consumption, while workplace EV charging is becoming an increasingly common addition to many commercial and industrial sites. As consumption climbs, so does the exposure to both ToU and MD charges, meaning the cost impact of these tariff structures is likely to compound over time, an important consideration as business operations continue to grow and evolve.

XD Solutions

To help businesses turn MD and ToU challenges into manageable, predictable costs, KVC offers Huawei's Smart String BESS as part of our XD Solutions portfolio for commercial and industrial applications in Malaysia. Depending on a facility's scale and space constraints, this comes in two form factors: the LUNA2000-241-2S10, a compact cabinet solution ideal for standard commercial and industrial sites, and the LUNA2000-5015-2S, a containerized BESS designed for larger-capacity utility-scale and heavy industrial deployments requiring higher energy throughput. The LUNA2000-241-2S10 delivers a round-trip efficiency of >91%, supporting ToU load shifting by charging during low-tariff periods and discharging during high-tariff hours with minimal energy loss.

Prediction precision

A BESS addresses MD and tariff costs by discharging stored energy at the right moments, supplementing supply during load spikes and shifting consumption to lower-tariff periods. The real challenge lies in knowing when to do this before a spike happens, not after. This is where Huawei's SmartEMO (Smart Energy Management Optimization) comes in, a feature within the Smart PV Management System that uses solar generation and load forecasting algorithms, achieving a prediction precision of 90% or higher, to intelligently schedule when the battery charges and discharges. Rather than relying on a fixed, manually-set threshold, SmartEMO applies a self-adjusting MD threshold based on the facility's own historical consumption data, continuously fine-tuning its optimisations over time to achieve greater MD reduction as it learns the site's load pattern. SmartEMO 2.0 is capable of increasing comprehensive revenue by up to 10% compared to manual scheduling, with facility owners able to track accumulated revenue and energy scheduling performance directly through the FusionSolar app.

Beyond intelligent scheduling, Huawei's Smart String BESS also incorporates additional features engineered to protect performance and safety at the hardware level. Each battery pack is fitted with its own independent energy optimiser, isolating any underperforming or inconsistent pack without dragging down the performance of the entire system. In a conventional modular BESS, degradation is uneven, cells and packs naturally decline to different States of Health (SOH) over time, and without individual optimisation, the pack with the worst SOH becomes the bottleneck that caps the entire system's usable capacity. Beyond capacity, the optimiser also governs how each pack discharges, coordinating output at the individual pack level so that healthier packs contribute more of the load while weaker packs are discharged more conservatively, ensuring the system draws on its available energy efficiently rather than discharging uniformly across packs of differing condition. What's more, the system supports a full 0 to 100% Depth of Discharge (DoD), meaning the declared BESS capacity is fully usable for operation without compromising cell health, unlike typical BESS designs that require reserving 5 to 10% of state of charge (SOC) as a buffer to preserve battery longevity. This same pack-level monitoring mechanism also enables automatic SOC calibration, reducing the need for manual routine calibration and helping lower ongoing operation and maintenance costs.

In addition to these built-in safeguards, safety performance is validated through rigorous independent third-party testing rather than internal assessment alone. The LUNA2000-241 series is tested to UL9540A, the North American standard for evaluating thermal runaway fire propagation in battery energy storage systems. Unlike UL9540, which certifies the safety of the BESS as a complete product, UL9540A goes further by evaluating fire behaviour across four escalating categories, cell, module, unit, and installation, providing the underlying data that shapes real-world fire protection and spacing requirements. In December 2024, Huawei's Smart String & Grid Forming BESS Platform, which includes the LUNA2000-241 series, became the first in the world to achieve TÜV Rheinland's highest-level "Prime" safety certification, the top tier of a three-level classification designed to ensure a BESS can contain pack-level thermal runaway even under extreme external conditions, safeguarding both the facility and its personnel.

Beyond the battery system itself, KVC offers a turnkey solution that builds out the full supporting environment around the BESS, integrating Huawei's Smart PV Inverters, SmartLogger for centralized monitoring and data communication, digital power meters for precise measurement at the grid connection point, and transformer systems, all managed under a single FusionSolar platform. This ensures the BESS is not deployed in isolation, but as part of a fully integrated, properly monitored energy system from generation to storage to consumption. With KVC's local presence and technical support across Malaysia, businesses can move beyond simply meeting a compliance requirement, towards a BESS solution that is engineered, deployed, and supported to deliver measurable value throughout its operational lifetime.

Benefit

By discharging stored energy at the right moments, businesses can significantly flatten MD spikes through peak shaving and demand charge management, directly reducing the MD portion of their monthly electricity bill. This is made possible by SmartEMO, which automatically optimises BESS charging and discharging based on load and tariff patterns, reducing reliance on manual scheduling and ensuring the system responds to demand peaks before they happen rather than after. The same application can be extended further, allowing businesses to charge during low-tariff, off-peak periods and discharge during high-tariff hours, capturing additional savings through energy arbitrage without any change to daily operations.

This level of performance is sustained over time through individual battery-pack optimisation at the hardware level, which manages varying battery health across the system and maximises usable energy throughout the BESS's operating life, rather than letting a single underperforming pack limit overall capacity. Underpinning all of this is a strong safety foundation: the system is backed by UL9540A testing and the world's first TÜV Rheinland "Prime" safety certification for its Smart String & Grid Forming BESS Platform, giving businesses added assurance of a system engineered and independently validated for safety at every level, from cell to installation.

Bringing it all together, integrated monitoring, metering, and power systems are managed under a single FusionSolar platform, and backed by KVC's strong local presence and after-sales support network across Malaysia, businesses gain a complete BESS solution engineered for safety, reliability, and long-term peace of mind, turning a regulatory requirement into a strategic advantage for the business.
