The V-belt acts as a transmission belt. Connecting the V-belt pulleys, it transmits the force from the engine to the ancillary components including the alternator, the hydraulic pump for the power steering. Cogged metric V-belts have grooves that run across the width of the belt. They run cooler than standard V-belts because the cogs allow the belt to bend and flex against the pulley, dissipating heat. Cogged belts are useful for small-diameter pulleys and drives with twists and turns. Single V-belts can be used alone or together in wide metric belt drives that hold multiple V-belts.
