news and events / Schneider Electric Launches EV Charging Station in Genting

Visitors to Genting Highlands can now conveniently charge their electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) at 6,000ft above sea level. Schneider Electric in partnership with Resorts World Genting (RWG) launched the first electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the Awana SkyCentral Transportation Hub Carpark located at Genting Highlands Premium Outlets (GHPO) on 6th September 2019. KVC Industrial Supplies is the master distributor and solution partner for Schneider Electric EVLink Wallbox. The charging station uses Schneider Electric’s robust and energy-efficient EVLink Smart Wallbox charging solution.

Studies have shown that sales of new electric cars worldwide surpassed two million units for the first time in 2018–a 64% increase over the previous year. Of course, this is just a microscopic market share of 2.1% out of total cars worldwide. Nevertheless, more consumers are embracing EVs for improved fuel economy, reduced CO2 emissions, and better driving experiences. In Malaysia, a total of 5,403 fully EVs and 46,981 PHEVs were registered as of March 31 this year. As of September 2018, there are 400 EV charging stations nationwide, deployed by various providers such as chargEV and Shell.

Schneider Electric’s EVLink Smart Wallbox charging solution is compatible with all EVs on the road today, able to charge up 10 times faster than a domestic socket outlet. This of course, depends on the EV used and the power rating of the charging station used. The EVLink Smart Wallbox has a charging power of either 7.4kW or 22kW, and a Type 2 socket out. With the 7.4kW box, it will take four hours to fully charge a typical 24kWh electric passenger car or one hour for a 40km range. With a 22kW Wallbox, however, that time is cut to just 20 minutes.

The charging station is compliant with full electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle charging standards and provides optimum user protection thanks to a dedicated brand circuit in the electrical switchboard that’s been inspected by a qualified electrician. Unlike domestic socket outlets, the solution is designed to deliver a high charging current for long periods of use daily. The solution has IP54-rated weather resistance as well as IK10 impact resistance. It comes with a friendly “Plug-in and Charge” design as well as an intuitive interface that includes a light indicator for charging status and a one-touch stop/restart button.

“We are thrilled to be partners with Resorts World Genting in their efforts to meet the demand for EV from its local and international holidaymakers at the resort,” said Ms. Asri Ramayanti Dharmawan, Country President of Schneider Electric Malaysia.

Mr. Ganaesan Subramaniam, Vice President of Hotel Operations at Resorts World Genting said Genting’s car park has an average of 50% occupancy rate on weekdays and up to 100% on weekends and holidays. Further, there is a large number of visitors who drive PHEVs and thus the company sees the value in setting up charging stations.

“We were fortunate to have met with Schneider Electric who is a pioneer in this field to set up our first EV charging system here. We are excited to be partnering with an established global specialist in energy management as Schneider Electric. Their charging solutions were awarded the Green Premium ecolabel that guarantees compliance with the most up-to-date environmental regulations,” Ganaesan added.

"We can confidently say that many of our customers drive premium urban vehicles which have petrol-electric versions these days, and there is a need to have (EV charging facilities) at the carpark," said Resorts World Genting vice president of hotel operations Ganesan Subramaniam. He also said Genting will continue to work with Schneider Electric Malaysia to install 20 units of charging stations at the hilltop as well as at SkyAvenue in the future.
