The Power of an Optimized Water Supply System

Water industry, what can be done to improve their operational efficiency? Incorporating with Rockwell Automation’s technology in the heart of the project, KVC has provided the water industry a breakthrough in optimum performance and cost saving system. It was first introduced in an event where the largest water and wastewater industry experts gathered – the Asia Water Expo 2018, held in April at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.


Intelligent is the word for this smart system whereby water distribution is controlled automatically depending on the water demand. This enables water operators to maintain water supply to customers in Malaysia while cutting cost of power consumption at the same time, thanks to the cutting-edge technology from Rockwell Automation.


There are many challenges faced by water operators today ranging from environmental factors, increasing population thus demand, water wastage or scarcity, incremental energy costs to operate, and high expenses of repair works and replacements. All these factors will be a hindrance to operators whose responsibility is to ensure maximum efficiency of water distribution. 


Thus, technological advancements have made possible to develop smart solution systems to counter some, if not all, of these concerns. The smart pump system through its array of unique and smart features counters these pain points of water distribution companies.


This intelligent system monitors the demand of the water supply at any given time, then operates all the pumps at their most efficient speeds to meet the demand while saving on energy consumption. This control system from Rockwell Automation provides an estimated 20-30% energy savings compared to the conventional controls that are widely used in the water industry currently.


The algorithm installed in the system by Rockwell Automation locates the best window of operation to determine the best point of the pumps performance to provide maximum flow rate depending on demand. This enables maximum throughput and energy savings.


Furthermore, the integrated motor protection features built into the system help to ensure the pumps and motors have longer life cycle, coupled with advanced predictive diagnostics to protect the system against downtime that may due to motor winding, bearings, shafts, or pump cavitation. As a result, the most effective operational cost with improved reliability and profitability can be achieved. 


The smart pump comes with the added benefit of condition monitoring deployment that allows remote control of the water distribution system from a dashboard on your desktop or phone – wherever, whenever – which provides significant convenience in operational access and systems handling regardless of the plant location. Besides improved productivity, the data collected is a source of intelligence for operators.


This Smart Pump Control, which is already being used by several water distributors throughout the United States, is now available in Malaysia. The system can be customised to meet the needs of the water industry in Malaysia.
